TOWER OF LONDON.

The Tower of London is a magnificent fortress and a World Heritage Site attracting in excess of two million visitors a year. It is a veritable treasure trove, containing fascinating facts and tales of the History of London.

It takes you on a journey through Medieval Times in London, on through The Tudor period and down through the intervening centuries right up to the present day.

Truly an international favourite, the only prisoners now being held within it's walls are the countless thousands of jealously guarded stories which it has accumulated down the centuries.

So, come inside this website and see for yourself; firstly, the events which led directly to its construction.

You will witness the Norman invasion and it's resulting Battle of Hastings, fought between the Anglo Saxon defenders, led by Harold Godwinson who, following the death of Edward the Confessor, had earlier been crowned King Harold, and the opposing army of Norman invaders, led by William Duke of Normandy, who would later come to be known as William the Conqueror.

All these events led directly to what we see before us today:

THE TOWER OF LONDON

In it's long and unique history , it has been used first and foremost for it's primary purposes, Fortress, Royal Palace and Prison(mainly high profile prisoners, such as Royalty and Nobility, although it has housed common prisoners too).

It has also been used as a place of torture and execution. Not many executions took place within it's walls, mainly high profile executions, (most took place outside it's walls on Tower Hill). but the ghosts of those who were, still roam within it's walls to this very day.

It has been used as an Armoury, Treasury, Zoo, Observatory, Public Records Office, Royal Mint and has housed the Crown Jewels since 1303.
