Experience Dickens London, at the Dickens and London Exhibition which takes place between Friday 9th December 2011 and Sunday 10th June 2012 at the Museum of London, London.
It recreates the Victorian London atmosphere that Charles Dickens knew so well and which inspired his writings to such an extent, that the city is now immortalized in all his works.
The first major Charles Dickens exhibition in the United Kindom for more than 40 years, celebrates the 200th anniversary of his birth, which took place on 7th February 1812.
An examination of the great social problems that were prevalent in the 19th century, such as the wealth of the relatively few, the unspeakable poverty of the many with the resultant childhood mortality and prostitution endemic to these lower classes, will be undertaken.
You will also discover, the relatively unsung and, it must be said, heroic efforts of many Philanthropists, who in their endeavours and struggles to bring to mind in both politicians and the wider public alike, the plight and sufferings of these unfortunate people, met with a huge level of success and were instrumental in bringing about widespread social reforms which had been so badly needed.
There will be rarely seen manuscripts at the Exhibition, written in the author's own hand writing, including Bleak House and David Copperfield, whilst paintings, photographs, objects and costumes, will be used to illustrate the various themes that Dickens introduced into his works.
The desk and chair which Charles Dickens used to write his novels will be highlighted in an audio-visual experience and a specially commissioned film by William Raban, one of the United Kingdom's leading documentary filmmakers, will explore the similarities between the night time in London of the present day, with the night time of London so vividly described by Dickens over 150 years ago.
Dickens London, Exhibition packages include afternoon entry (1pm - 4pm) to the exhibition plus overnight accommodation at a nearby hotel.
