I fell in love with this market in Camden the first time I went there. It is actually a collection of several adjoining street markets in Camden Town close to the Hampstead Road Lock (more commonly referred to as Camden Lock) which is situated on the Regent's Canal in North West London.
These markets have combined to form the largest street market in the UK and with it's stylish and exciting character, it has achieved the ability to attract approximately 100,000 people every weekend, making it the fourth most popular visitor attraction in London.
Unlike other markets in London, Camden Market originated comparatively recently.
Although a small local food market had already been trading in Inverness Street since the early twentieth century, it was only as recently as 1974 that a weekly crafts market began to be held each Sunday at Camden Lock Market, close to Camden Lock.
It was from this very inauspicious start that the huge complex of markets we now see today began, continuing to grow at full strength, apparently without losing any of it's original force of expansion.
Camden Lock Market, together with the extremely popular alternative fashion centre at Camden Stables Market, the Inverness Street Market, Buck Street Market and Camden Lock Village are the markets which make up this fascinating complex.
Originally operating only on Sundays, there has been a discernable increase of activity on Saturdays and an ever growing number of traders operating throughout the week.
So if your weekends are fully booked and you have spare time during the week, it is certainly well worth the effort to go along to enjoy a mid-week visit.
However, it is still at the weekends when everything in Camden Market springs into life, with the hustle and bustle in and around the shops, bars, restaurants and stalls. Everywhere and everything fully swinging and bouncing with activity.
As mentioned above, Camden Market is a huge tourist attraction at weekends, with visitors coming from around the globe and from all walks of life. Don't be at all surprised to find yourself competing with the rich and famous for bargains. They all come here.
The likes of Stella McCartney, Giorgio Armani, John Paul Gaultier, have all been spotted. They all love to come.
The diversity of it's people alone, both traders and customers alike is something to be experienced. It is matched only by the diversity of all the goods that Camden Market has to offer for sale.
Today, there are hundreds of stalls, cafes, bars, restaurants, shops, collectively offering a huge assortment of goods to peruse.
Ranging from antiques, jewellry, arts, crafts, CD's, DVD's, records, foodstuffs and all kinds of collectable items, there seems to be just about everything you could imagine you would ever want or need. There is something there for everyone.
A fire broke out around 7:30pm on 9th February 2008 in the Camden Canal Market area, caused by the illegal use of a Liquid Petroleum Gas Heater which had been left turned on in a clothes stall.
It badly damaged the rear of the Hawley Arms, where the singer Amy Winehouse had made her name. (May Amy Rest In Peace) It took 100 firefighters to extinguish the blaze in which fortunately there were no casualties.
The extraordinary Camden Market is well worth a visit.
OUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF AMY WINEHOUSE AT THIS SAD TIME. GOD BLESS YOU ALL
